Finding and Mapping Shared Drives

Guide Overview

We provide access to your network drives directly from your Windows or Mac systems. You can access CGIS account drives or RCE account drives without logging in to those services. For example, you do not have to log in to your RCE account to access web publishing volumes or other files stored in the RCE.

Follow the connection instructions described in this guide to connect to the shared drives.

CGIS Account Connection Parameters

Use the following parameters to connect to your CGIS account drives:

  • Server name - oes.hmdc.harvard.edu
  • Account - CGIS account username and password

RCE Account Connection Parameters

Use the following parameters to connect to your RCE account drives:

  • Connection - See Accessing Remotely Using SFTP to connect to the RCE
  • Server name - publish.hmdc.harvard.edu
  • Account - RCE username and password

Mapping a Network Drive in Mac OS X

To map a network drive in Mac OS X:

  1. In the Finder, click the Go menu at top, and then select Connect to Server.
  2. In the Server Address field, type smb://oes.hmdc.harvard.edu, and then click Connect.
    You are prompted for your username and password.
  3. Enter your Novell username and password in the appropriate fields, then click Connect.
    A listing of available network places appears.
  4. Select the network space you would like to access, and then click OK.
    The network space opens.

Mapping a Network Drive in Windows

To map a network drive on a Windows platform, and gain access to your website files:

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. In the My Computer window, select the Tools menu, and then select Map Network Drive (see Figure 1).

  3. Select an unused drive letter on which to mount the share. In Figure 2, we selected drive "W."

  4. In the Folder field, enter the path to the share. An example is shown in Figure 3.
    The path always start with the text \\publish.hmdc.harvard.edu\. Depending on which department you are mapping, the last section will vary.
    Enter the path to the share in the Folder field.
  5. Click Finish.
    You might briefly see a dialog similar to Figure 4 while your machine mounts the share.

Disconnecting A Network Drive

To disconnect a mapped network drive on a Windows platform:

  1. Open the My Computer window.
  2. Select the drive from which you choose to disconnect, and then select the Tools menu, Disconnect Network Drive option.
    Note:     After you disconnect the drive, it no longer appears in your Explorer window unless you remap it.
